For most homes and commercial properties, outdoor sensor lights are hardwired. In Queensland, all fixed electrical work must be carried out by a licensed electrician. While the installation itself should be left to a qualified professional, you can still make the important decisions beforehand—such as where light is needed, how the sensor should operate, and which style best complements your property.

How to install outdoor sensor lights: start with a plan
Walk around the property after dark if possible. A location that seems obvious in daylight can create glare through a bedroom window, shine directly at a neighbour’s fence or miss the step that needs lighting most.
Think about the purpose of each light. A sensor light at the front door should clearly light the path, lock and entrance. At the side of a house, it may need to cover a gate, wheelie-bin area or narrow accessway. At a shed, garage or commercial rear entrance, broader coverage and a brighter fitting may be more useful.
Also consider where people and vehicles approach from. The sensor needs a clear view of the movement you want it to detect. A light mounted above a front door can be ideal for someone walking up the path, while a fitting on the corner of a building can cover a longer driveway or side access.
Choose a fitting made for the outdoors
Not every LED light is suitable for exposed conditions. Check the fitting’s IP rating, which indicates its resistance to dust and water. The more exposed the position, the more important this becomes. A covered entry may only receive occasional moisture, whereas a wall facing Toowoomba storms and driving rain needs a fitting designed for tougher weather.
Brightness is measured in lumens, not watts. For a small entrance or path, modest output can provide comfortable, practical visibility. A large driveway, workshop entrance or loading area may need a higher-lumen floodlight. Brighter is not always better, though. Excessive output creates harsh shadows, glare and unwanted light spill.
Light colour matters as well. Warm white produces a softer, welcoming look around entrances and entertaining areas. Cool white often suits garages, sheds and security-focused spaces where crisp visibility is the priority. Choose a quality LED fitting with a replaceable driver or a good manufacturer warranty where possible, especially for lights that will be difficult to access later.
Match the sensor to the location
Most outdoor lights use a passive infrared, or PIR, sensor. It detects changes in heat across its field of view, making it effective for people, pets and vehicles. PIR sensors generally detect movement across their view better than movement directly towards them, so the angle of the fitting can affect performance.
Microwave sensors can detect movement through some lightweight materials and may offer broader sensitivity. That can be useful in particular applications, but it can also lead to nuisance switching if the sensor picks up activity beyond the area you intend to cover. For most residential exterior lighting, a well-positioned PIR sensor is a straightforward and reliable choice.
If you want a light to operate only after dusk, select a fitting with an adjustable lux setting or built-in daylight sensor. This prevents the light activating unnecessarily during the day.
Position the light for useful coverage
Mounting height influences both light spread and sensor detection. Too low, and the fitting may be easy to bump, tamper with or accidentally trigger. Too high, and it can create deep shadows beneath the light or reduce the sensor’s ability to detect someone approaching close to the building.
As a general guide, exterior sensor lights are often installed around 2 to 3 metres above ground level, but the best height depends on the fitting, the area being covered and the surrounding structure. A licensed electrician can assess the manufacturer’s recommendations and identify a secure mounting point.
Keep the sensor away from common false-trigger sources. These include air-conditioner outlets, heat pumps, barbecue areas, moving branches, busy roads and reflective surfaces. A sensor facing a street may activate whenever cars pass. One aimed across a garden can respond to pets or foliage on windy nights.
Where possible, direct light downwards and towards the property rather than outwards. This improves visibility where you need it, reduces glare and is more considerate of neighbours. It also helps protect the fitting from unnecessary weather exposure.
Understand what the installation involves
A proper hardwired installation is more than attaching a light to the wall. The electrician will first isolate and verify the circuit, assess the existing wiring and confirm that the proposed circuit can safely supply the new fitting. They will use suitable outdoor-rated cable, enclosures and fittings where required, and ensure all penetrations are sealed appropriately to reduce water entry.
The light needs a sound mounting surface. Brick, rendered masonry, timber cladding, steel structures and eaves each require different fixings and techniques. The goal is a stable installation that will withstand vibration, wind and normal outdoor conditions without damaging the building finish.
Your electrician will then connect the light in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable electrical requirements, restore power and test operation. This includes checking that the sensor activates as expected, the light turns off after the selected time and the circuit’s safety protection is operating correctly.
If there is no suitable nearby power source, a new cable run may be needed. This can involve access through the roof space, under the floor or along an approved external route. It is worth discussing cable placement before work begins, particularly on rendered walls, heritage-style homes or commercial façades where appearance matters.
Set the controls after installation
Most sensor lights have three adjustments: sensitivity, time and lux level. These settings should be tuned after dark, once the fitting is installed in its final position.
Start with the sensitivity at a middle setting and the timer set for a short period, such as one or two minutes. Walk through the area from the usual approach direction. If the light activates too early or picks up movement outside your boundary, reduce the sensitivity or adjust the sensor head slightly. If it fails to detect someone near the entrance, increase sensitivity or revise the angle.
Set the lux level so the light only operates when ambient light is low enough. At dusk, small adjustments can make a big difference. The timer should be long enough for someone to reach the door, unload the car or safely walk through the area, without leaving the light on for extended periods after every activation.
Avoid common outdoor sensor light problems
A light that stays on constantly may be responding to ongoing movement, heat, a poorly aimed sensor or a setting that is too sensitive. A light that does not come on may have its daylight setting configured too high, meaning it believes there is still enough natural light.
Water ingress is another common cause of failure. Condensation inside the lens, corrosion around terminals or a tripped safety switch should not be ignored. Turn the circuit off and arrange an electrician to inspect it rather than attempting a repair yourself.
If you are replacing an older halogen floodlight, check that the existing mounting location and wiring are still in good condition. LED sensor lights use far less energy and produce less heat, but an old cable, cracked mounting block or deteriorated junction point can still create a safety issue.
Consider solar sensor lights for simple areas
Solar sensor lights can be a useful option for a remote gate, garden shed, letterbox or pathway where running power would be impractical. They avoid hardwiring, but their performance depends heavily on the solar panel receiving enough direct sunlight. Shaded yards, south-facing walls and extended cloudy weather can limit runtime.
For a main entrance, security-sensitive area or busy driveway, a hardwired LED sensor light is usually the more dependable choice. It provides consistent output and avoids relying on a battery that may gradually lose capacity.
