That small red light on the television, microwave clock and coffee machine may not look like much, but they can quietly draw electricity every hour of the year. If you want to save power by turning devices off standby, the trick is to focus on the equipment that is genuinely wasting energy without making daily life less convenient or affecting safety.
Standby power is often called a phantom load. It is the electricity used while an appliance is not actively doing its main job but is still ready to respond - keeping a display lit, listening for a remote control signal, maintaining a clock or charging a battery. One item is rarely the problem. A home full of always-on devices, however, can add up.

Which devices are worth switching off?

At a minimum, switching off the power board overnight or when you go away removes that ongoing draw.
Home offices are another common source of avoidable consumption. Monitors, desktop computers, printers, docking stations and speakers can use power while waiting for the next workday. If you work from home, a power board with an accessible switch makes it simple to turn off the whole setup at the end of the day. Just make sure your computer has fully shut down first and any unsaved work is protected.
Kitchen bench appliances are worth checking too. Coffee machines, air fryers, microwaves and other appliances with digital displays may use standby electricity. Chargers deserve a quick look. Modern quality chargers generally use very little electricity when nothing is connected, but there is still no benefit in leaving a charger plugged in permanently if it is not needed. Removing it also keeps benches and bedside tables tidier and reduces the chance of damage to leads.

The goal is not to walk through the house each night flicking off every socket. A system that is too inconvenient usually will not last. Create a few sensible zones instead.
Use switched power boards for entertainment systems and office equipment. Choose a quality board with overload protection, avoid overloading it and keep it in a dry, accessible position. Never daisy-chain one power board into another, and do not run leads under rugs or through areas where they can be crushed.
A smart plug can be useful for a single appliance that is difficult to access, such as a lamp, fan or printer. Timers can also suit equipment with predictable operating hours. These controls are most helpful when they support your routine, rather than adding another app or setting to manage.
Remote-controlled devices need a little more thought. Turning a television off at the wall may mean it takes longer to start, loses quick-start functions or cannot receive updates. For many households, that trade-off is perfectly reasonable overnight. For others, the saving may not be worth the extra inconvenience. Check how the device behaves after a full power-off before making it part of your routine.
Look for the bigger hidden loads
Not every standby load has a glowing display. Modems, Wi-Fi extenders, security cameras, smart speakers, smart home hubs and network storage can all use electricity continuously. Some must stay on to perform their purpose. Your modem cannot provide internet access if it is switched off, and a security system needs power to monitor your property.
Rather than switching critical equipment off at random, ask whether each device is needed all day. An unused old printer, spare television in a guest room or forgotten gaming accessory is an easier target than a device supporting your security, communications or work.
If your energy retailer provides interval usage data, look at your overnight power use. It will not identify every appliance, but a consistently high base load can be a prompt to investigate. Turn off selected groups of devices for a night or two and compare the result. This is more useful than guessing.
What should stay on?
Some equipment should not be switched off at the wall just to chase a small saving. Fridges and freezers need continuous power to keep food safe. Medical equipment must remain powered according to the supplier's instructions and any backup-power plan. Fish tanks, aquariums and terrariums may rely on heaters, pumps, filters or lights for animal welfare.
Pool equipment also needs careful management. Pumps, chlorinators, controllers and lighting should run on appropriate schedules for the pool and season. Cutting their power without understanding the setup can lead to poor water quality, equipment problems or a pool that costs more to restore later. If you want to reduce pool running costs, correct pump times, efficient equipment and suitable controls are better places to start.
Do not switch off smoke alarms that are hardwired or connected to other safety systems. Likewise, do not interfere with safety switches, solar equipment, hot water controls or electrical switchboards. These are not ordinary plug-in appliances.
Air conditioning is a common question. Turning a split-system unit off at its isolator is generally not necessary for day-to-day energy savings. Use the remote to turn it off when the room is empty, select sensible temperature settings and clean filters regularly. If an air conditioner has a fault, trips a circuit or seems to be using excessive power, arrange for a licensed electrician or air conditioning technician to assess it.
Small changes work best alongside efficient choices
Switching off standby power can reduce unnecessary consumption, but it is only one part of an efficient home. In many Queensland homes, heating and cooling, hot water, cooking, clothes dryers and pool pumps have a much greater effect on the bill. That does not mean standby savings are pointless. It means they should be easy, repeatable and put in perspective.
LED lighting is a good example. Replacing old halogen downlights with suitable LED fittings can make a more noticeable difference than worrying about a single charger. The same goes for using air conditioning wisely, sealing draughts and choosing energy-efficient appliances when an old unit reaches the end of its life.
For commercial premises, standby management can be even more worthwhile because there may be multiple screens, printers, point-of-sale equipment, chargers and displays left powered after hours. A clear shutdown routine helps staff know what can be turned off and what needs to remain active. Keep critical systems, refrigeration, security and networking separate from general plug-in equipment so there is no confusion.
A safe, practical starting point
Walk through your home or business after hours and look for devices with lights, clocks, warm power packs or active displays. Start with one area, such as the television cabinet or home office, and set up a safe way to switch that group off. Give it a fortnight. If nobody misses the always-on functions, you have found a saving that takes almost no effort to maintain.
