Why is my pool light not working? Start with the safe basics

Before touching anything near the pool light, check whether the light is being controlled by a wall switch, timer, remote or pool automation system. Timers can lose their settings after a power outage, and automation systems can be placed into a mode that stops the light from operating.

Next, check the switchboard from a dry location. Look for a circuit breaker or safety switch that has tripped. If it has, do not keep resetting it. One reset may be appropriate after checking there is no obvious issue, but a breaker or safety switch that trips again is doing its job. It may be detecting a fault in the light, cable, transformer or another item on that circuit.

Do not enter the pool to inspect a fitting, remove a light from its niche, or attempt to change a globe while the system is energised. Even many low-voltage pool lights rely on electrical components that must be correctly installed, sealed and tested.

The most common reasons pool lights fail

A failed globe or LED module

Older pool lights often use replaceable halogen globes. Like any globe, these can burn out. If your light has become dimmer over time, changes colour unexpectedly, flickers, or has stopped working altogether, the globe or LED module may be at fault.

The repair is not always as straightforward as fitting a new globe. The housing seal, lens and cable entry must remain watertight. A damaged gasket can allow water into the fitting, which can shorten the life of the replacement and create a larger electrical problem.

Modern LED pool lights generally last far longer than halogen lamps, but they do eventually fail. In some models, the whole LED light assembly is replaced rather than a single globe. The right approach depends on the make, age and condition of the existing fitting.

Water inside the light fitting

Condensation or visible water behind the lens is a clear warning sign. Pool light fittings are designed to keep water out, so moisture usually points to a failed seal, cracked lens, damaged cable gland or a compromised fitting.

Water ingress can cause flickering, corrosion and repeated tripping at the switchboard. It may also damage the light permanently. Turn the light off and avoid using it until it has been inspected. Replacing only the lamp without resolving the water entry point usually leads to the same issue returning.

A faulty transformer or driver

Many pool lights operate at low voltage through a transformer or LED driver. These components reduce and manage the power supplied to the light, and they can fail through age, heat, moisture, electrical surges or incompatible replacement lighting.

A transformer fault can look very similar to a failed light. The switch may appear to work normally, but no power reaches the fitting. In some cases, the light may briefly turn on, flicker or operate intermittently. Testing the supply and output correctly requires appropriate equipment and electrical knowledge.

Damaged wiring or cable connections

The cable between the pool light and its power source is exposed to a demanding environment. It may run underground, through conduit, around pool equipment or behind the pool shell. Over time, cable insulation can deteriorate, connections can corrode, and rodents, landscaping work or previous repairs can cause damage.

Faults in this part of the system are often behind lights that trip a safety switch, work only occasionally, or stop working after heavy rain. Finding the exact location of a cable fault can take specialist testing. This is one reason a proper diagnosis is better value than replacing parts at random.

A switch, timer or automation fault

Sometimes the pool light itself is fine. The issue may be a worn wall switch, failed timer, remote receiver or automation relay. If other equipment on the same control system is behaving strangely, such as pumps not following their schedule, the control equipment deserves closer attention.

A qualified electrician can test each point in the circuit and determine whether the fault sits with the light, transformer, controls or wiring. That avoids paying for a replacement fitting when the real problem is elsewhere.

What different symptoms can tell you

The way your pool light fails can provide useful clues. A light that is completely dead may have a blown globe, failed LED module, tripped breaker, transformer issue or disconnected cable. A light that flickers can indicate a failing globe, loose connection, moisture or a deteriorating driver.

If the light trips the safety switch as soon as it is turned on, stop using it. This commonly suggests an earth leakage or insulation fault and needs prompt professional assessment. If it only trips during wet weather, water may be reaching a connection, junction box or damaged cable.

A light that works for a few minutes before going off may be overheating. This can happen with a failing transformer, poor connection or unsuitable lamp. It can also occur when an older fitting has been fitted with a replacement that is not compatible with its electrical setup.

When replacing the light makes more sense

Repair is not always the best long-term option. If you have an ageing halogen pool light, repeated globe failures, a corroded fitting or an obsolete transformer, upgrading to an LED pool light can be a practical decision. LEDs use less energy, generate less heat and usually provide a brighter, more even result.

There are trade-offs. A simple globe replacement may cost less upfront if the fitting and wiring are sound. However, continuing to repair a deteriorating old system can become frustrating and expensive. An electrician can assess whether an LED retrofit will work with your existing niche, cable and transformer, or whether a complete fitting upgrade is the safer choice.

Colour-changing LED lights are also popular for entertaining areas, but they need compatible controls and a reliable installation. Choosing the cheapest product without confirming compatibility can create avoidable faults later.

What a professional pool light inspection involves

A proper inspection starts with isolating the circuit and checking the condition of the switchboard protection, transformer or driver, controls and visible connections. The electrician can test voltage, continuity and insulation resistance to identify where the fault is occurring.

They will also inspect the light fitting for water ingress, damaged seals, corrosion and signs of heat damage. If replacement is needed, the new light and any associated components should be selected to suit the pool setup and installed in line with applicable electrical requirements.

How to reduce future pool light problems

Pool lights do not need constant attention, but regular checks help catch small problems early. Look for fogging inside the lens, changes in brightness, flickering and safety switches that trip unexpectedly. After major storms, flooding near pool equipment or landscaping work, it is wise to check that the light is still operating normally.

Keep pool equipment areas dry where possible and make sure electrical enclosures remain properly closed. If your pool is due for a renovation, it is also a good time to assess old lighting, transformers and controls rather than waiting for a failure on the first warm night of summer.
