Why Outlets Spark and When to Call an Electrician

Why power points spark when you plug something in

In Australia, we usually call them power points, but the cause is the same. When you insert a plug while an appliance is switched on, electricity can begin flowing before the plug pins are fully seated. That brief connection can create a small visible spark, particularly with appliances that draw a higher start-up current.

Heaters, kettles, toasters, vacuum cleaners, air conditioners and some power supplies can all draw a quick surge when they start. This is known as inrush current. A tiny, one-off spark at the plug can occur in that situation, especially if the appliance switch was left on.

A brief, tiny spark during plug insertion is different from signs of overheating or a failing connection. Do not touch a hot, wet, damaged or smoking power point.

If there is fire, smoke or an immediate danger, move people away from the area and call 000. Never use water on an electrical fire.

A safety switch that trips when you use a particular power point or appliance is also giving you useful information. It has detected an electrical problem and cut power to reduce the chance of electric shock. Do not repeatedly reset it in the hope it will stay on. Leave the affected circuit off where possible and have a licensed electrician identify the cause.

Take extra care where water is involved. A sparking power point near a sink, laundry, bathroom, outdoor area, pool pump or marine installation needs prompt professional assessment. Even a small amount of moisture can compromise electrical components and make a fault more dangerous.

What to do if a power point sparks
