The best lighting for workshops provides bright, even illumination exactly where it's needed, without creating harsh glare or eye strain.
For most home workshops, sheds, garages and small commercial workspaces, LED lighting is the obvious choice. It uses significantly less power than older fluorescent fittings, switches on instantly, produces less heat and delivers crisp, reliable light for many years. However, achieving the best result is about more than simply replacing a bulb. Brightness, colour temperature, fitting placement and professional installation all play an important role in creating a safe, productive workspace.

Start with the work you do
A workshop used mainly for storing garden gear needs a different approach from one used for cabinetry, mechanical repairs, welding or detailed hobby work. Before choosing fittings, think about where you stand, what surfaces you work on and whether you need to spot fine detail, read measurements or assess colours accurately.
General lighting should make it easy to move around safely and find what you need. Task lighting provides a stronger, more directed layer over benches, machinery and inspection areas. In a well-lit workshop, these two layers work together. Relying on one central light fitting usually leaves the bench in shadow, especially when your body blocks the overhead light.
Ceiling height also matters. A standard garage with a lower ceiling can often be effectively lit with LED battens. A larger shed with high ceilings may need high-bay LED fittings, which are designed to throw light further down onto the work area. Installing a high-bay fitting in a low shed can create harsh glare, while underpowered battens in a tall workshop can leave the floor and benches dull.
How bright should workshop lights be?
Brightness is measured in lumens, not watts. Watts tell you how much power a fitting uses; lumens tell you how much visible light it produces. This is particularly useful when comparing efficient LED options, as a low-watt LED can deliver far more light than an older fitting.
As a practical guide, general workshop areas often benefit from around 300 to 500 lux at floor level. Benches where you cut, assemble, repair or paint commonly need 750 to 1,000 lux, sometimes more for very detailed work. Lux is the amount of light reaching a surface, so it is a better indication of usable light than a lumen figure on a box.
A simple starting point is to allow roughly 500 lumens per square metre for a general-purpose workshop, then add separate lighting over work zones. A 30-square-metre garage, for example, may need around 15,000 lumens of general lighting. That could be spread across several LED battens rather than coming from one powerful fitting.
Spreading the output is usually the better option. Multiple fittings reduce dark spots, soften shadows and mean you are not left in the dark if one fitting fails. White ceilings and lighter wall colours also help reflect light around the space. Dark rafters, timber-lined walls and open shelving absorb more light, so those workshops may need extra output.
Choose a useful colour temperature
Colour temperature is measured in kelvin, and it changes how a room feels as well as how clearly you can see. Warm white light, around 3,000K, has a yellow tone. It suits living areas but can feel too soft for practical workshop tasks.
For most workshops, neutral white at about 4,000K is an excellent all-round choice. It is clear and comfortable for extended periods, making it suitable for garages, tool rooms and workbenches. Cool white, generally 5,000K to 6,500K, has a crisper blue-white appearance and can work well in detailed task areas, mechanical bays and commercial spaces.
The best choice depends on personal preference and the task at hand. If you paint, finish timber or work with coloured wiring, pay attention to the fitting's colour rendering index, known as CRI. A CRI of 80 is acceptable for general use, while 90 or above gives more accurate colour definition. Better colour rendering can make it easier to identify paint differences, wire colours and small marks on a surface.
The best lights for workshops are usually LED battens
LED battens are a popular choice for good reason. They provide broad, even coverage, suit standard ceiling heights and are available in lengths and outputs to suit anything from a compact garden shed to a larger garage. They are particularly effective when installed in parallel rows above the main work area.
Look for quality fittings with a durable diffuser that reduces glare. In dusty sheds, workshops exposed to moisture or areas that are regularly washed down, consider a fitting with an appropriate IP rating. An IP65 fitting, for instance, offers good protection from dust and water jets, but it is not necessary for every dry internal garage. Matching the fitting to the environment avoids paying for protection you do not need while ensuring the light can handle the conditions where you work.
For higher ceilings, LED high bays provide more concentrated output. They are common in commercial workshops, farm sheds and larger machinery spaces. Their beam angle needs to suit the mounting height and layout. A wide beam can give better general coverage at moderate heights, while a more focused beam may be needed where fittings are mounted well above the floor.
Strip lights and adjustable task lights have their place too. An LED strip under a shelf can brighten a bench without casting a shadow, while an adjustable task light is useful at a vice, drill press or electronics station. These should complement the main ceiling lighting, not replace it.
Plan the layout before installation
Good workshop lighting starts with the layout, not the fitting catalogue. Mark the bench, vehicle bay, machinery, storage shelves and door positions. Then place fittings so light falls in front of you or from both sides, rather than directly behind your usual working position.
Over a long workbench, install a batten above the front half of the bench rather than immediately behind it. This helps light the work surface without your head and shoulders creating a large shadow. For a central vehicle bay, rows of fittings running lengthways can give more even coverage along both sides of the vehicle.
Avoid placing every light on one switch. Separating general lighting from task lighting lets you use only what is needed and provides a useful backup if one circuit trips. Sensor lighting can be helpful at an entry door, but manual switching remains more practical inside a workshop where you may be working quietly for long periods.
Glare deserves attention, particularly around polished tools, metal benches, computer screens and machinery displays. Frosted diffusers, sensible fitting positions and several moderate-output lights are generally more comfortable than a few intense point sources. If you notice yourself squinting, the light may be bright enough but poorly controlled.
Safety is part of the lighting decision
Workshop lighting is often installed around metal shelving, machinery, dust, moisture and extension leads. That makes proper electrical work essential. Fixed wiring, new circuits, hardwired light fittings and switch changes must be completed by a licensed electrical contractor in Queensland.
