A new air conditioner should make your home or workplace more comfortable, not create a day of avoidable delays. Knowing how to prepare for aircon installation means your installer can get straight to the job, assess the site safely and leave you with a system that performs as expected through a Toowoomba summer or a cold winter morning.
Most of the preparation is simple. It comes down to choosing sensible locations, ensuring clear access and raising any questions about power, drainage or building approvals before installation day.
Confirm the right system before installation
Preparation starts before the installation date. An air conditioner needs to suit the size and use of the room, not just fit a spot on the wall. A unit that is too small may run constantly without properly cooling or heating the space. One that is too large can cycle on and off too quickly, which may affect comfort, efficiency and moisture control.
Think about how the space is used. A sunny, open-plan living area with large windows, high ceilings or limited insulation has different requirements from a shaded bedroom. Commercial spaces also need consideration for customer traffic, heat-producing equipment, operating hours and the number of people regularly in the room.

Clear access before the installer arrives
A clear work area helps the job run safely and on time. Move furniture away from the proposed indoor wall and remove fragile items from nearby shelves. If the installer needs access to a roof space, clear the manhole area and make sure there is a safe path to it.
Outside, remove pot plants, garden furniture, children’s toys and stored materials around the planned condenser location. Trim back shrubs or branches that obstruct access. If a gate is locked or a dog is usually in the yard, organise this before the team arrives.
For commercial properties, let staff know when the work is happening and keep customers away from the installation zone. It may be necessary to temporarily move stock, clear a counter area or arrange access to a locked plant room. A little coordination protects people and prevents disruption to the business day.
Plan for electrical requirements
Air conditioning is electrical work as well as mechanical installation. Your installer needs to assess whether the existing switchboard and circuits can safely support the new system. This is particularly relevant in older homes, properties with recent additions, or businesses already running substantial equipment.
Do not rely on extension leads, temporary power arrangements or assumptions about an old circuit. A properly installed air conditioner needs suitable electrical protection and compliant connections. Before the appointment, make a note of any electrical issues you have noticed.
